DIY Christmas Project Wrap-Up
Wow, it’s been awhile since I posted anything!  I had a nice holiday hiatus {read: a month-long fury of DIY crafting and Christmas creating}!  Now that Christmas is over, I’m excited to share some of my creations with y’all.  Drumroll please…. for my DIY Christmas Project Wrap-Up 2015…

Right around Thanksgiving this year, I upgraded my crafting machine.  Mom and I have shared an old Cricut machine for years and I decided it was time for a change!  I ordered a Silhouette machine… if you’re not familiar with these, they are crafting machines that cut shapes/words/stencils/etc.  I did LOTS of different projects all in the span of about a month to get to know my new machine {aka: I spent lots of time crafting and very little helping with reno projects this month… sorry hubby!}.

We have 6 nieces and nephews on my hubby’s side of the family.  All of them have the necessities {clothes, shoes, school supplies} so I try to come up with a crafty gift each year… something more unique than the latest, greatest toy… plus 6 of the latest greatest toy would be expensive.  Last year, I made each of the nieces and nephews a no sew fleece blanket.  I’ve made lots of these blankets before, so this project was one I was fairly comfortable with {although it was still a mad dash to finish them at the last minute}.  In searching for gift ideas for the kiddos, I found a picture of a wooden nativity set and remembered the sets we used to make at church.  My parents used to use wood 2x4s and glue felt pieces on as a church craft.  Given that we have the saw and sander all set up for the renovation, I thought a wooden nativity was the perfect gift!  Update: I’ve added a tutorial for crafters who want to try the PVPP method which I used on the nativity blocks.

There’s a pre-teen in our community who is CONQUERING cancer right now.  He is a huge Star Wars fan, so he got a special viewing of the movie, complete with a limo ride, donuts and more!  I wanted to make him something special, so I came up with this sign as encouragement.

For the youngins on my side of the family, we opted for name blocks.  These are a fun, easy{ish} project that most kids and parents love.  I know as a kid I always hunted for my name on personalized items.  Three kids in the family got name blocks… it’s hard to see in the picture, but the pink set even has sparkly letters {as are obviously appropriate for princesses}.

I bought some ornament blanks with the idea that I’d make an ornament for our tree each year we’re married with any milestone events from that year {2014’s ornament will be our wedding; 2015’s will be our house purchase}.  Since I got super busy with other projects, I didn’t get these made.  Next year I’ll have to start earlier so I can get all three annual ornaments made.  Although I didn’t get our ornaments done, I did get some very, very special ornaments made as gifts.  For my precious friend whose dad is in Heaven, I made this ornament.  This was probably one of the most special/heartfelt gifts I have made in a while.  Getting to surprise her with this gift brought me such joy!

A few other friends/family members got these simple Believe ornaments.  They were so much fun to make!  I love giving gifts that I have invested not only money, but also time into.

Since I DIYed several gifts, I didn’t want to leave my immediate family out!  My sweet hubby has worked so hard on our home reno and I wanted to make him something he’d really appreciate.  One of my friends sent me a link to an “ugly” Christmas sweatshirt online that had rifles on it.  {I’m not really sure why it was classified as an ugly Christmas sweater.  This thing is a gem, obviously.}  Hubby and I exchanged gifts on Christmas eve.  He was excited enough about his shirt that he wore it for our Christmas day festivities {three different family gatherings}.

I made my mom a shirt that says “I was crafty before crafty was cool”.  It was a lot simpler than the guys’ sweatshirts and a quick project {relatively speaking}.

Here’s a preview of some of the other goodies I made… boy was it a busy month!

Shew!  I am worn out just thinking about everything I made in only a month {using a new machine, no less}!  My saint of a mother did pitch in by shopping for supplies and helping with many of these projects.  Maybe next year I’ll get an earlier start on our DIY Christmas projects… so I have time to squish more last minute goodies in!
