The {Almost} Magical Solution to Clothing Stains + Stinky Pits

Okay – let’s talk about a super fun topic today… clothing stains and stinky pits {Hey, we’re being real. It happens.}… and one practically magical cleaning solution.

My winter coat is white… which is cute, except for the fact that I can’t own white clothing {I’m like a 4 year old here… seriously, white doesn’t stay white for .4 seconds}.  My coat was dirty at the end of the sleeves and along the bottom hem.  I have already tried washing it in various temperatures, spraying with stain remover… all of the normal fixes.  Nothing had helped my random, gross looking coat {boo}.

Alright, everyone say it together…. YUUUUUUCK.

In addition to the winter coat issues, my work shirts have started to have stinky pits.  I think it’s from the dry fit/workout material… none of my normal clothes have had this issue until recently.  It doesn’t help any that my nice{r} work clothes are washed with my hubby’s dirty, yucky, super stinky clothes.  When the clothes, come out of the wash they smell clean… but as soon as I sweat one tiny bit it’s like BRING BACK THE STINK SHE’S EVER HAD WHILE WEARING THIS SHIRT.

Several months ago I joined a facebook group called Laundry Love & Science.  LL&S is an interest group of mostly ladies who share cleaning ideas and recipes.  I have started referring to this group as my “cleaning ladies” because they have the cleaning solution to fix pretty much anything you can imagine.  These lovely laundry goddesses have instructions for two hardcore clothing cleaning solutions: deep cleaning and stripping.  I didn’t have the materials on hand to do a strip, but I did have the items for a deep clean!  Bonus – I just cleaned my bath tub a few nights ago {score}!

I filled my bath tub half way full with the hottest water I could get, then added my deep cleaning ingredients {1 cup of Arm & Hammer laundry detergent, 1 cup of Biz, a few squirts of Dawn dish detergent}.  The Dawn works to remove oil from clothing.  The Tide container is actually filled with Biz powder… it’s a laundry cleaning booster.  I put my cleaning gloves on, then mixed up the water by hand until the Biz dissolved and dumped in my clothes!

It’s helpful to mix the clothing around every once in a while… you can either mix with your hand or just get in the tub and walk around on the clothes.  I just rolled my fleece lined leggings up and got my grape-stompin’ action on {that I’d been wearing for about a day and a half…. I mean it was the weekend}.  After about 2 hours, I drained the water and repeated the process.  A few hours after the second batch of water started, I drained the water again and put all of the items in my washing machine without any detergent, then dried everything in the dryer.

Much to my delightful surprise, the cleaning solution concoction actually worked for my beloved coat!  The sleeves came out looking perfectly white and brand new.  Oh, and yay for happy smelling pits.  I wore one of the shirts today with no deodorant all day {what, I wanted to see if the solution really worked!}.  Good news – at the end of the day my shirt still smelled fresh…. Okay, fresh might be a stretch… but it smelled like roses compared to before the deep cleaning and that’s a big win in my book!  Yay for non-stinky pits and white coats!
