Pregnancy Journal Update – 1st Trimester Wrap Up

Pregnancy Journal Update - 1st Trimester Wrap Up - BorrowedBlessings.net

This trimester flew by! I can’t believe we’re a third of the way done! I’ve struggled some with attitude {I know this is shocking you, mom}. Between the physical sickness and hormones, there are days of moodiness. I try to combat this with gratitude {don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I succeed all the time… just ask my poor husband}. I make it a goal to start each day by taking a moment to thank God for allowing me to carry this child today. I don’t know what the future will hold and I am in control of so little during this process, but I can be thankful just for today! I think this has really helped me keep perspective and not worry.

1st Trimester Starting Weight: 118ish lbs.
1st Trimester Ending Weight: 118ish lbs.
My weight is basically flat for the first trimester, as it should be. I’m a little surprised that the numbers aren’t reflecting my growing belly, but I’m totally okay with that!

Highs & Lows {aka Happies & Crappies}:
At youth group, we share our highs and lows {which one of my besties calls happies and crappies}. My least favorite moments of this trimester were spent over a toilet and in bed. I slept away most of this trimester, and I’m so thankful that I have a schedule that allows me to go to bed crazy early most evenings. My favorite moments of this trimester were getting the positive pregnancy test, telling Michael and my parents the news, having a recognizable baby bump and seeing our baby for the first time at our 12 week ultrasound!

1st Trimester Typical Day of Eating {well, late 1st trimester – once I was able to eat semi-normally}:
6:30-7:30am: Breakfast {Saltines, Dry Cereal, etc}
9:30-10am: AM Snack {Apples & Peanut Butter}
12pm: Lunch {Pasta, French Fries, other carbs}
2-3pm: PM Snack {Saltines, Cheese Slices, Carrots – whatever sounds ok that day – sometimes I skip this snack}
5:30-6:30pm: Dinner {Pasta, Grilled Cheese}
9pm: Evening Snack {Saltines, Fritos, etc – something so I don’t go to bed nauseous}
There you have it! My daily meal. As you can see, I eat pretty much whatever I can stomach, which equals lots of carbs and VERY little meat. I will occasionally get a hot roast beef sandwich for lunch or eat pizza with meat toppings, but meat hasn’t sounded appetizing since the beginning. I try to keep the morning and afternoon snacks healthy-ish to make up for the carb overload, so I’ll often have apples and peanut butter in the morning and carrot sticks or cheese slices in the afternoon. I also went through the water-allergic phase when I ate 1-2 popsicles every day to try and boost my liquid intake. THANKFULLY, I’ve been able to stomach water the last few weeks {although I do still get nauseous if I drink very much at once}.

Medicines:
As of the end of the 1st trimester, I’m still taking 2 Diclegis pills daily {both before bed}. These are an anti-nausea medicine and they are a godsend! I went from throwing up and miserable to feeling halfway human within a day of starting this medicine. The doctor said I can safely take it as long as necessary, so for now I’m going to keep taking it! Once I feel like my nausea has subsided, I’ll try stopping the Diclegis. I’m so thankful for modern medicine and our insurance making this affordable! I’m taking a prenatal vitamin daily and may have to add an iron supplement at some point, depending where my iron levels are.

Purchases:
I really haven’t bought too many baby clothes yet {since we don’t know gender}. I bought 2 Christmas themed outfits about a year and a half ago that I used as part of the announcement to my husband. I’ve purchased just a few baby outfits {on clearance when Kohl’s sent me a birthday coupon}. Update: Okay, so as of 12 weeks and a few days, we hadn’t bought many baby clothes. Except then my mom and I decided to go to “a” yard sale… which turned into a community yard sale… which turned into me buying a few {ahem, several boxes of} baby clothes. I actually had a super fun time washing, folding and sorting all of the clothes {my mom and one of her friends came over to the house and we had quite the time oohing and aaahing over the adorable baby things. I know the laundry won’t be fun once baby is here, but for now it is, so I’m cherishing that! We still don’t know gender, so we’re just going to sell/donate the clothing that ends up being the wrong gender.

I’ve been blessed in the maternity clothing department! One of my sisters-in-law gave me some of her maternity clothes, while another gave me a substantial discount coupon at Motherhood Maternity {thanks ladies}! I’ve also bought a few maternity things secondhand.

Our big purchases were at the Dorel factory sale – we got 3 car seats, a stroller, a highchair, a travel baby seat, a pack and play and a few other goodies, all at about half of the retail price! The last big item we’ve purchased was the crib & mattress. We got these secondhand from a family friend for $50 {score!}.

Clothes:
Speaking of buying maternity clothes, whoever invented pants with an elastic waistband should get the Nobel Prize. As I purchased maternity clothes, I packed them in a box {thinking I wouldn’t need them until after our move}. I’ve worn my normal jeans and shirts until week 12… when I asked my husband to get the maternity clothes box back out again. I can still fit into my regular shirts and some jeans, but the normal jeans are getting very uncomfortable around the waist. I wore maternity jeans for the first time at the end of week 12. They were a little big, but SO MUCH more comfortable than too-tight jeans against my belly! I’m now wearing these most days and am thanking my sweet Jesus for stretchy waistbands.

Journaling:
Once upon a time {about 4-5 weeks}, I was determined to journal every bit of this pregnancy. Mom and I went to Barnes & Noble to look at baby books, then I ended up ordering not one, but two of them. For the first few weeks I did pretty well with journaling. Then the nausea/“morning” sickness and life-altering fatigue set in. Let’s not talk about how those journals make really good coasters. I haven’t touched them in weeks. However, I have been good about keeping up with weekly blog posts. I think I’ll take all of those and make a photo book at the end of the pregnancy. You win some, you lose some.

How life has changed:
I know I said this already, but it is seriously insane that we’re 1/3 of the way finished with this pregnancy!
-EATING – I eat way more often now than before I was pregnant, but it’s not so much a well-this-is-fun-let’s-try-eating-for-two thing so much as a if-I-don’t-get-food-right-this-moment-I’m-going-to-pass-out sort of feeling. I’ve gotten much better at eating something the moment I feel nauseous… which is quite the opposite of what I’ve done the entire rest of my life. I am eating healthier… er, differently, than I used to. My fruit and veggie consumption has gone way up, but I haven’t wanted much meat since the beginning. Carbs and fruit, fruit and carbs.
-CLEANLINESS – I know they say cleanliness is next to Godliness, but I’ve never been a Susie Homemaker. By golly, I sure kept the toilet flushed all the time and cleaned more than normal this last few months (after I’d spent few month choosing the best toilet). You never know when you might be face-to-face with that bad boy, so it becomes an extra special cleaning locale. Thankfully the puking period is over for the most part. Since I’ve done so well for weeks though, baby did decide to celebrate week 13 with some dry heaving one morning… isn’t that precious?!
-PILLOWS – Ohhh, the pillows! Pre-pregnancy Kara slept with 1-2 pillows stacked on top of each other under her head. How sweet. Pregnant Kara needs 74 pillows squished here, there and everywhere to create a little cocoon of pregnant rest. Seriously, I turned into a pillow hog. We just kept adding more and more pillows to the bed. Finally I bought a pregnancy pillow at about 11 weeks and it’s pretty glorious.
-SLEEP – Speak of sleeping, I do quite a bit of that these days. As in, I could sleep in, get up, eat breakfast, be productive for an hour, then go back to bed for a 2 hour nap and repeat. I wake up one time most nights to go to the bathroom.
-BEDTIME ROUTINE – My bedtime routine used to be: go to the bathroom, get in bed, watch a tv show or two, take one tiny pill then go to sleep. Now, my bedtime routine is more like: go to the bathroom, make a late night snack, eat said snack in bed, go to the bathroom, watch tv for a few minutes, take one tiny pill plus two slightly larger pills followed by one horse pill, go to the bathroom then go to sleep. Not even sort of kidding.
-ENERGY – I used to consider myself a sort-of energetic person… as in, I could walk to the mailbox and back without dying. At this point, I’m huffing by the time I get back to the house. My breath is also gone so much more quickly than it used to be! My energy level is pretty low compared to my pre-pregnancy self. During the 1st trimester, I found that there are all kinds of activities that are better completed while sitting down {such as: cutting strawberries, folding laundry and taking a seated rest break after getting out of the shower}.

Thanks for following along on our pregnancy journey!  We would love to have your prayers over the health and development of our little peanut! Check out all of our pregnancy updates and follow Borrowed Blessings at the top of the page.
