DIY Satin Ribbon Garland Tutorial

One of my favorite baby shower decorations to make has been our DIY satin ribbon garland banner.  It is so classy looking, was super easy to make and can be re-used after the baby shower is over.  This would be perfect for a wedding, bridal shower, birthday party, baby shower, kids’ bedroom decor… pretty much anywhere you want to bring a pretty pop of color without breaking the bank.

Materials:
Double faced satin ribbon {I used 2.25″ wide in light pink, rosewood and pewter.}
Paracord
Scissors
Lighter
3M Hooks {for hanging}

  1. Figure out how tall you want your ribbon garland to be.  I figured this out using trial and error.  The ribbon pieces will be folded in half to hang them, so you need to cut the ribbon a little longer than 2x your desired height.  The first piece I cut was about 2 feet long, but once I put it on the paracord I quickly realized I wanted longer pieces.  I ended up using pieces about 3 feet long.DIY Satin Ribbon Garland Banner Tutorial - BorrowedBlessings.net
  2. Cut the ribbon to a little more than twice your desired length for the garland.  Like I said above, the ribbon will be folded in half, then you’ll lose a little more length in the knot.  Try a few pieces before you cut all your ribbon and realize you’d like a different height.  Cut an equal number of pieces of each color ribbon you’re using.  I used three colors of ribbon.  You can use more or less, but I like the look of three colors.DIY Satin Ribbon Garland Banner Tutorial - BorrowedBlessings.net
  3. Seal the ribbon.  Before I started this project, I read some information online about working with double faced satin ribbon.  One of the things I noticed immediately when cutting the ribbon is that it frays very, very easily once cut.  If you quickly pass a lighter over the freshly cut edge of the ribbon, it will seal the edge and not fray.  It just takes a second or two for each piece {don’t hold the flame in one place or it will blacken the ribbon – trust me}.DIY Satin Ribbon Garland Banner Tutorial - BorrowedBlessings.net
  4. Attach the ribbon to the paracord.  You can tie it however you want.  I folded the ribbon in half, laid the ribbon over the paracord, then looped it back through itself.  Repeat this, alternating colors, until you’ve used all of your ribbon or until you reach your desired garland length.  I ended up making a garland that’s about 5 feet long.  I started with 25 yards of each color of ribbon, so I still have coordinating ribbon left over for other baby shower projects!DIY Satin Ribbon Garland Banner Tutorial - BorrowedBlessings.net
  5. Finish the ends of the paracord.  Once you’re finished with the garland, you’ll want to melt the end of the paracord with the lighter to prevent it from fraying.  I also tied a knot in each end of the paracord for easier hanging.

TA DA!!!  This project took a few hours total {while watching tv and hanging out with family}.  I hung it across the welcome table at our baby shower.  It was a fun splash of color and easily hung with removable 3M hooks.  We’ve had so much fun making things for baby’s shower and her nursery!  Stay tuned for more of our DIY baby shower ideas and projects.
