Supplies:

Small popsicle sticks (for elementary kids)
Large popsicle sticks (for preschoolers)
Markers (fine tip work best)
Painter’s tape
Rubber bands

Instructions – elementary kids:

Give each kiddo a set of popsicle sticks. I used one for each word of the bible verse plus one for the scripture reference. For the verse I used (Isaiah 40:29), I needed 12 small popsicle sticks.

Line up the popsicle sticks and put two strips of painter’s tape across them. This tape is just to hold them together while kids decorate them. You might want to have kids write their initials on one of the popsicle sticks.

Flip the puzzle over so the tape is on the back. (It’s easier to do if the popsicle sticks are horizontal, so you can write one word on each stick.) Have kids draw a mountain scene using lighter colored markers.

Let kiddos write one word of the bible verse on each popsicle stick, then the scripture reference on the bottom popsicle stick. (I’d hang the bible verse around the room several times so kids can copy from it.)

Once the picture is completely finished, remove the painter’s tape from the back side and throw it away.

Turn this craft into a game by challenging kids to mix up the sticks, then put them back in the right order quickly! This will help them learn the bible verse, too!

I’d suggest giving kids a rubber band to keep their puzzle together.

Instructions – preschool kids:

PREP: Count out large popsicle sticks for each kiddo. I used 8 sticks and it was a nice size. Line up the sticks and tape across them to hold them together while the kiddos decorate the puzzle.

AT VBS: Give each kiddo a puzzle, with the sticks horizontal. Have an adult write each kid’s name on the back of one stick.

Let the kids color a picture on the popsicle sticks using markers. (I’d suggest washable markers, because… preschoolers.)

I didn’t give my kiddo direction on what to draw… it’s so fun to see what they come up with on their own!

Once kids have finished decorating their puzzles, write the bible verse on the popsicle sticks using a dark marker. I used a shortened version of the day’s bible verse from Rocky Railway VBS, as we do with our preschool group.

Most preschoolers won’t be able to read the words to put the sticks in order, so number the sticks. A lot of preschoolers will be able to identify the numbers and put them in order.

Rubber band the popsicle sticks together, then send them home with the kids.
