Rocky Railway VBS: DIY Railroad Crossing Signs

A few years ago we built 4′ tall wood posts. They come in SO handy for VBS and other church events! This year, for Rocky Railway VBS, we turned them into railroad crossing signs.

Cut foam board into strips that are each 22(ish) inches long and 4(ish) inches tall (2 strips per railroad crossing sign). Make sure your knife is very sharp. The first knife we used was a little dull and it made the foam board look shredded along the edge. We switched out for a newer box knife and the result was a smooth, clean edge.

Use a large sharpie to write “rail road” on half the strips and “crossing” on the other half. Make sure to leave a 5 inch gap in the middle of the word railroad, because the crossing board will go on top.

Attach each railroad crossing sign to a wood post using a drill and screws in the X shape as shown below.
