Wooden Cross Craft – Vacation Bible School Ideas

Our church typically uses the vacation bible school curriculum created by Group Publishing.  Every Group curriculum, regardless of theme, uses night 4 (Thursday night for us) to tell the story of Jesus’ life and death (and offers kids the chance to accept Jesus).  I like doing a cross craft at Imagination Station for the Jesus story.  My goal is always to keep crafts under $1 per child per night, but if I’m going to splurge on a craft I want it to be a keepsake… so I will occasionally spend over $1 if it’s a special item.

This year, kids are going to decorate a wooden cross on Thursday night of VBS.

Supplies
Plain wooden crosses (I like these and these) — you could also use a plain cross windchime for fun!
Spray paint (if you’re going to paint the crosses ahead of time)
Paint and paint brushes (if you’re going to let the kids paint the crosses)
E6000 glue or Aleene’s tacky glue
Buttons
Sequins
Bottle caps
Washi tape
Flat washers
Sharpie markers

Instructions
1. (Optional) Spray paint crosses before VBS.  If you want kids to have colored crosses and you’re on a tight time schedule like ours, you’ll need to spray paint the crosses ahead of time.  I’m planning to paint ours bright colors, but also leave a few unfinished plain wood.

2. Have students write their names on the back of their crosses.

3. (Optional) You can have the students write their bible verse or daily bible point on the cross if you want to.  You could also do this ahead of time for younger kids.

4. Let each student decorate their wooden cross.  You can use pretty much any craft supplies, from something as simple as drawing on the crosses with permanent markers to decorating the crosses with sequins, jewels or small items that correspond with that year’s theme (such as small washers for Maker Fun Factory).

I am a long-time Vacation Bible School lover.  I’ve lead in several capacities throughout the VBS world and am currently our church’s VBS director.  It is a joy for me to be able to share VBS ideas and resources with others!  I will continue to share ideas here as we prepare for Maker Fun FactoryVBS .  Follow the blog to see more of our ideas and planning!  Please let me know if there are any specific VBS items or ideas you need help with!
