Roar VBS: Egg Shaker Instrument Craft

Lions and zebras and elephants, oh my… Roar VBS is quickly approaching!  This year’s safari-themed VBS is sure to be an adventure your kiddos will cherish for years to come!

These egg shaker instruments are a frugal craft that kids will enjoy using throughout VBS and after!

Supplies:

Plastic Easter Eggs (regular or large size will work!)
-Filler item to make shaker noisy (pony beads, perler beads, seed beads, rice, beans, etc)
Duct tape
Permanent markers
-Optional: Plastic spoons (if you want your shaker instruments to have a handle)

Instructions:

-Put a noise maker item inside each plastic Easter egg. This can be plastic, glass or even food (some ideas include pony beads, perler beads, seed beads, rice, beans, etc). Keep in mind: If you plan to use any of these in your Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, you may NOT use any food items! It doesn’t take a lot of your shaker item to make it noisy. I looked for extra supplies in our church craft room and found a few different types of beads!

-Close each plastic egg and use duct tape to keep it closed. You can use solid color duct tape or fun animal/tribal prints! It can be kind of hard to get the duct tape to go on smoothly, so go slowly.

-Optional: If you want your shaker to have a handle, place the egg between two plastic spoons. Cover the spoons in duct tape. (You still want to put a small amount of duct tape on the egg itself so the beads don’t leak out.)

-Write each kid’s name somewhere on their egg using a permanent marker. Depending on the size of the egg and the type of duct tape you use, you can let them decorate the egg/duct tape if you’d like!

Ta da! Now it’s time to twist & shout (and shake) your way through closing music with your new shaker instruments! This is a quick craft, so your kids will likely have time to make more than one egg shaker instrument if this is your only craft/Imagination Station activity for the evening. We often have our kids make one item to keep, then a duplicate to pack in our Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

My two year old had lots of fun playing with the egg shaker (the one with the handle was easier for her to hold). I would NOT do this craft with toddler/preschool kiddos though – there are small pieces and the duct tape would be too difficult for them to manage.

I am a long-time Vacation Bible School lover.  I’ve lead in several capacities throughout the VBS world and am currently our church’s VBS director.  It is a joy for me to be able to share VBS ideas and resources with others!  I will continue to share VBS ideas here as we prepare for Roar VBS.  Follow the blog to see more of our ideas and planning!  Please let me know if there are any specific VBS items or ideas you need help with!
