Poster Board Train Decor

Once in a while, I have an idea that works out as great as I imagine it’ll be… this decor project is one of those! Check out this awesome poster board train – it serves both as advertising before VBS and as a way to display the bible verses during VBS.

This train is made from 6 large sheets of poster board (each one is approximately 22″ x 28″). The first sheet of poster board has been made into the front of the train. Each of the remaining five pieces of poster board are decorated on two sides: one side with information advertising VBS and the back side with this year’s VBS bible verses.

Supplies:

7 sheets of poster board
Black construction paper
School glue
Chisel tip permanent marker
Scissors
Painter’s tape

Instructions:

I made the front of the train using two sheets of poster board. Use one full sheet (on the right, vertically). The left side of the train car is made by cutting off about 6″ of the second sheet of posterboard.

Save the small strip of posterboard for another project (like this construction paper train craft), then glue the two larger pieces together (as shown below).

Glue a sheet of black construction paper to the taller side of the train to make a faux window. Use a chisel tip black marker to add words to the train car – I wrote All Aboard the VBS Express.

Print a circle template (8″ round), then cut out 12 wheels for the train from black cardstock paper or construction paper. There will be 3-4″ of leftover paper. Trim these into rectangles and save them for hooking your train cars together on the wall.

Put a circle of painter’s tape on the back of each wheel, then attach them to each train car.

Decorate the remaining five sheets of poster board. I decorated the front sides with information that will be helpful before VBS. These are:

When I hang the whole train at VBS, I’ll add more volunteer details to that train car. I haven’t decided if I’ll put notecards with each volunteer job available, or a general plea for volunteers.

Next, decorate the back side of the 5 train cars. I wrote each of the Rocky Railway VBS bible verses on one sheet of poster board.

This train will be a nice, large decoration once it’s hung at church (each sheet of poster board is 28″ wide, so the entire train will be about 14 FEET LONG!). Don’t lose that leftover black construction paper from the wheels… when you hang the whole train, tape or staple these black strips to attach the train cars together (the black strips won’t actually hold weight, they’re just for looks).

I’m so excited to get this train up at church so other people can GET ON BOARD with Rocky Railway VBS!
