Decoupage VBS Signs – Maker Fun Factory VBS

I love decorating projects that use up supplies we already have… not only are these low-cost/no-cost, but it’s also fun to see how creatively leftover supplies can be used!

Supplies:
Posterboard
Clear packing tape
Duct tape
Cardstock paper
Liquid school glue

Decoupage materials:
Tissue paper squares
Foam shapes/scraps
Paint dot markers
Cotton balls
Pom pom balls
Markers

Instructions:

1. Cut posterboard into an arrow shape.  I used a regular sheet of paper to make sure my arrow was straight.  The part of the arrow with letter is 11″ across {the same as the sheet of paper}.  I just laid the sheet of paper on top of the back {yellow side} of the posterboard and traced the straight edges.  I free handed the arrow at the bottom, again using the sheet of paper for a straight edge.  A regular sheet of posterboard is 22″ across, so I got two straight sign sections from each sheet of posterboard.  It took about 1.5-2 sheets of posterboard for each decoupage sign.

2. Tape pieces of posterboard together using clear packing tape.  My signs all had at least two pieces of posterboard taped together.

3. Print letter outlines on cardstock paper {or freehand letter outlines}.  In Microsoft Word, find a font you like, then type each word you want to print.  Make the font as large as it can be to fit on a sheet of paper.  To make any font an outline, use the Word Art tool.  Print these, then cut them out.

4. Glue materials onto each letter outline.  This is a great project for a volunteer work day!

5. Once all the letters are dry, glue the letters to the posterboard arrow shape.

6. {OPTIONAL} On one of our decoupage signs, we added duct tape around the edges.  It really made the sign pop!

Tips from our experience:

-Use lightweight materials.  The cotton balls, tissue paper, pom pom balls and paper/foam scraps all worked really well.

-Sequins and glitter do NOT work well.  Eeeeek… I ended up re-doing the E above because the sequins were falling off all over the place.
