Door Hanger Dot Painting Craft

My 3 year old has gotten into crafts more and more as she’s gotten older. One day recently she decided she wanted to paint so we dove into the craft supplies to find some fun things to paint on and paint with… here’s our creation! This foam door hanger dot painting craft is adaptable for any age kiddos.

Supplies:

Foam door hangers or unfinished wood door hangers
Black permanent markers – fine point
Cross cookie cutters
Acrylic paint
Disposable plates (for paint palettes)
Q-tips

Instructions:

First, trace a cookie cutter to create a cross outline on your foam door hanger using a permanent marker. I think we’ll use these cookie cutters for all kinds of projects, so the set of 3 was a great purchase for us. I’m very happy with the quality and sizes! (If you don’t have the funds to purchase cookie cutters, you could print cross templates off the internet and cut them out on cardstock paper.) If you’re doing this craft with younger kiddos, I’d trace the crosses ahead of time.

Have each kiddo write their name on the back of their door hanger using a ball point pen or permanent marker.

Instruct the kids to add words to the door hangers – this will be easier BEFORE you paint. (We painted, let them dry completely, then I added the words. This also works fine… but if you want the kids to write the words themselves, do it before paint gets involved.) We wrote Because of Jesus, I have HOPE so we can use this as a take-home craft at Rocky Railway VBS 2020. (I’d suggest only using black permanent markers for the words. I tried using metallic gold on the dark blue foam, but the metallic didn’t work well on foam. Black worked well on both foam colors.)

Put several small piles of acrylic paint on disposable plates with a q-tip in each color of paint.

Encourage kids to paint the whole area inside the cross with q-tips, only by making dots. I painted ours by holding the q-tip vertically, dotting it in the paint, then dotting 2-3 times on different areas of the cross. I showed my 3 year old once or twice how to just dot (not smear) the paint and she was able to paint her cross on her own.

Since these use acrylic paint, I’d make sure they’re fully dry before you send them home with kiddos. The foam door hangers should be ready by the day after you paint them, as long as kids don’t use massive globs of paint.

We’ve had fun dot painting several projects! Have you tried dot painting? What did you paint?
