Roar VBS: Photo Booth Ideas

Lions and zebras and elephants, oh my… Roar VBS is quickly approaching!  This safari-themed VBS is sure to be an adventure your kiddos will remember.

For the last several years, we’ve had a photo booth in our foyer at VBS.  Crews can visit the photo booth after they finish eating snack or individual kids/families can visit the photo booth after closing each evening.  We print pictures before the Sunday VBS Program and distribute them as a VBS keepsake (some years we use them at the craft station on day 5).  Check out the ideas below for fun photo booth ideas… backdrops, props, costumes and more!

For a super quick and easy Roar VBS photo booth…

This design a room backdrop from Oriental Trading is 8’x30′!  It comes in 3 sections to quickly and easily attach to the wall – and voila, your photo booth backdrop is done!
This photo booth prop set is adorable!  I even spy a few bible buddies in there!  This set is currently under $8 on Amazon.  The other safari-themed props are around $20, so this one is a great deal right now!
This foam animal mask set includes 50 masks for under $17 (but not all of them are safari themed).  Restock your prop room or dress up supplies with the masks that don’t work with this VBS!  These foam masks will probably last longer than the paper photo booth props.
This safari dress up kit has a bunch of items for photo booth props!  The only thing I wouldn’t use is the whistle – I’m afraid kids would want to put their mouths on it and eek, the germs… Even without using the whistle, this set includes a bunch of items for the price!

For a DIY Roar VBS photo booth…

Purchase rolls of red, orange, yellow and black bulletin board paper. Hang them horizontally on your wall to create a safari sunset. To really create a neat visual, trace and cut out black animal silhouettes and hang them on the sunset backdrop! I’m planning to use this idea either in our photo booth or for our main stage (or maybe a variation of it in both areas).  I’m really excited about how it will look!
Visit this website for free printable safari animal mask templates.  Print the animals on cardstock paper, then let your church kids decorate them as a VBS prep project!  This will not only get your kids excited for VBS, it’ll also help you get projects done!  You can add elastic string for kids to wear the masks or small dowel rods for the kids to hold the masks, or they can just hold onto them as-is!
Surely your church has some men or women who enjoy fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities, right?!  Chances are they have cargo vests similar to the one shown above… borrow a few of these to use for completely free, and totally fun, photo booth props!
DIY Safari Vests: Surely I can’t be the only one who remembers turning a paper bag into a vest, right?!  Check with your local grocery stores to see if they’ll donate paper bags, or you can purchase them in bulk from Sam’s Club.  Cut arm holes, a neck hole and a slit up the front, then decorate for your safari adventure.  These could also be a fun craft for the kiddos to make, then wear to the photo booth for pictures!

I usually try to have some props that kids wear/hold (like the various masks above) in our photo booth, as well as a few larger items, like bible buddy plush animals or other large props that match the theme.  Do you have a VBS photo booth?  What do you include in your photo booth area?
