Supplies:

Posterboard
Scissors
Paper cutter
Markers
Glue sticks
Construction paper – bright colors & black
Optional: pictures of kids printed on adhesive labels

Instructions:

Before VBS:
-Lay the posterboard landscape (aka horizontal), then use scissors to cut posterboard into 4 long strips. Each one should be 5.5″ x 28″. (Each sheet of posterboard will be enough for 4 kids)
-Use a paper cutter (or scissors if you don’t have a paper cutter) to cut the bright construction paper into various sizes of rectangles.

—You want to be able to write on the paper with a marker, so don’t use the super dark colors.
—I cut ours in half (hot dog style) first, then cut into smaller rectangles. Keep in mind if you have any rectangles taller than 5.5″, they’re going to stick off the top of the paper.
-Use scissors to cut the black construction paper into circles (these will be train wheels) – mine are about 1.5″ across.
-Optional: print pictures of your kids on adhesive labels (you could print them on regular paper, but the labels are quick and easy, especially for younger kiddos)

At VBS:
-Give each kid a sheet of pre-cut posterboard. Have them write their name on the back (if you’re not planning to put it on the front).

-Let the kids arrange construction paper train cars in whatever order they’d like, attaching rectangles to the paper with glue sticks.
-Add black circles as wheels on the train cars using glue sticks.
-Optional: Add a photo of each kid to the first train car.

-Use a black marker to draw lines connecting the train cars. (We totally forgot to do this step – ha! My 3 year old didn’t notice.)

-Use markers to add words to the train cars. We did “Jesus helps me stay on track”, then discussed things we can do to stay on track (read our bibles, pray, live out Jesus’ love by being kind to others, etc). You could also write the bible verse or another slogan.
