Rocky Railway VBS: Decorating Supplies

All aboard the decorating train! These decorating supplies will complement Rocky Railway VBS and can be mixed in with other purchased or DIY decor.

I am a large proponent of DIY decorations and VBS projects, but realistically we all need filler items to mix in with our handmade decor. Here are some filler decorative items that will work throughout Rocky Railway VBS (there are also some fun non-decorating finds at the end of the post)… buckle up, though… this is going to be a wild ride (aka a long post)!

This train light might not be a complete necessity, but how cool would this look inside a tunnel that kids can either walk through or peek in to see the train?!
I love it!
These table runners are adorable! Think outside the box… the “table runner” could easily be a train track on stage, on a wall, through a tunnel, you name it (just be careful using them on the floor – they’re made of plastic so I’d worry about kiddos slipping on them if they were walked on)! There are 4 per package (each is just over 7 feet long).
These floor clings are colorful and perfect for younger kiddos!
This 11″ tall sign lights up and is only $16!
How fun is this train pop up tent?! It’s perfect for nursery, toddler or preschool kiddos!
I don’t use hats in our photo booth area, but that doesn’t mean we skimp on fun props! I try to have some 3D items, with some paper props mixed in. This set has 10 props for about $6. There’s a larger set available that has 20 props.
Bubble train… I think my 2 year old just added this to her birthday list! 😉
We’ll for sure be getting a train set (preferably with lights and smoke) to set up for VBS! My husband has asked if we can get one to put under our Christmas tree, so Santa may be good to him this Christmas! 😀 Side note: Apparently there are about a million types of model trains available. Best of luck.
I think I may get one of these to use for our VBS advertising/registration table. I’ll keep watching for it to go on sale too… because $10 is a lot to this frugal lady, but it’s adorable!
Life size train cutouts… I’m sure Group, Oriental Trading and others will release their own stand up cardboard trains. There are several different types of cardboard cutout trains available already (make sure to check the prices – each design is priced differently).
This tin railroad crossing sign is only $8… sign.me.up. Check out the photo below for an idea how this would look on a wood post.
This railroad crossing cutout is about $30. Want to save money? I would advise using a wood post and the tin sign above to have a realistic railroad crossing sign.
These are technically paper plates, but they’d be perfect as filler decor hung on the walls (I’d attach them with rolled up painter’s tape). Like this idea? There are also paper plate stop signs and railroad crossing signs!
This handheld stop & go sign is only $8 AND it lights up?! I’m going to have so much fun with this one! Haha
These train balloons are super cute! They’d be a great attention grabber on a parade float or attached to a banner by the road. (Note: The balloons are latex, so be cautious of latex allergies.)
Okay, so yes… these are advertised as treat bags… but you can totally use them as decor! We have hung similar bags as filler decor the last several years in hallways, the preschool area and more! 2 dozen bags are under $6… cha ching!
These paint-your-own trains would be a great activity for kids before VBS to amp up the excitement! You could also paint your VBS info on them for advertising (note that the set above is pretty small). This set looks larger and you can still add your VBS info.
These popcorn boxes are ADORABLE! I’m envisioning them sitting on our registration table to hold pens! You could use them as table centerpieces, to hold sharpies in the craft station… the possibilities are endless!
This waterfall & mountain archway is actually marketed for Wild Encounters VBS… which means it’ll be marked down (and then most likely won’t be available in 2020).

This stone wall plastic can be used with many VBS themes, including Rocky Railway! Use it on walls, around cardboard boxes, as the side of a cardboard “building”, etc! You can see it used in several places in Group’s decorating preview photos.
Aren’t the rolls of patterned plastic wonderful?! This wood pattern plastic is the same size and type as the stone option above, but wood pattern instead of stone.

Non-Decorating Rocky Railway Items
The finds below aren’t necessarily decorating items, but they were too fun not to include!

Train cookies anyone? These cookies would be great for advertising VBS or as a volunteer thank you gift! The train cookie cutters could also be used with nursery/toddler or preschool kiddos as playdough toys!
Okay, so these wooden whistles are not purely a decorative item… but they can be used as filler decor. (Also, how can you be prepared for your train adventure without a whistle?!)
You’ll obviously need a train conductor hat to go with your train whistle. Kids conductor hats are available for about $1.50 each. Adult/adjustable conductor hats cost about $2 each. You can use these for crew leaders or your music team, as prizes, you name it (although I don’t usually put hats in our photo booth area because of head lice).

Keep watching for more decorating supplies… I’m working on a bunch of backdrop options next!

Make sure to check out the decorating preview photos here for some Rocky Railway inspiration! I haven’t decided what our decorating will be, but I do know that we always use filler items… so if I find things at a great deal (or I think they’re likely to sell out), I’ll order them up to a year in advance.
