Rocky Railway VBS: Quick & Easy Backdrop Ideas

At Vacation Bible School this year, our goal is to whisk kids away to a town in the mountains… I want them to hear the train chugging along, the whistle in the distance, to practically feel that cool mountain breeze! We try to make our VBS as realistic as possible, while staying budget friendly.

As usual, we will DIY some spaces to save on cost (and because I love a good DIY project), but we will use some hang-it-and-go decor in other areas (and as fillers). Check back later in the VBS season to see what I come up with for DIY backdrop ideas! Until then, here are some quick and easy Rocky Railway VBS backdrop ideas…

The 5’x7′ backdrop above is vinyl, so it’s easier to save and re-use than plastic backdrops. Plus, it’s just gorgeous to look at!

This 10’x8′ vinyl backdrop would be perfect for a photo booth, on stage, etc! There are lots of different mountain scenes available here!

Don’t have space for a life-size train? Just hang a vinyl train on the wall! It’s 5’x7′ and under $20. You could attach this directly to a wall, or hang it using a backdrop stand.

This Train interior backdrop is similar to the one above – it’s vinyl material that you could mount on the wall or hang on a backdrop stand. Doesn’t this make you feel like you’re totally inside a train in the mountains?!

We use backdrops in most of our VBS stations, as well as the church foyer (aka registration/photo booth/missions focus wall). This Train station platform would be cute for a photo booth… who’s waiting for their train?!

Shower curtains

Amazon has a bunch of train printed shower curtains available… bonus: most of them are under $20 each!

If you’re going to have a train in front of the backdrop, I’d advise using a backdrop with just mountains/landscape on it. Check out these mountain landscape shower curtains! Many of them are less than $20 each.

Have you found other backdrop ideas yet? I’m still in the research stage, so I’ll be sharing more ideas as I come up with them! Follow Borrowed Blessings for more VBS resources & ideas.
