Supplies:

Train templates
White card stock paper (1 sheet per child)
School glue
Scissors and/or paper cutter
Ruler
Material(s) to cut your triangles out of, such as colored paper, construction paper or craft foam (craft foam is easier for young kids to pick up)

Instructions:

PREP: Copy train templates onto white card stock paper (at least one train per child) – choose the “fill page” setting.

PREP: Cut triangles out of colored card stock paper, construction paper or craft foam. To create triangles that fit the train template, cut squares that are 1.75″ tall, then cut them diagonally to make triangles. (If you want a little space between your triangles, cut the squares 1 5/8″ tall.)

Let kids use school glue to attach triangles to the train. The train template is designed to fit 1 5/8″-1.75″ tall triangles. If you want to give older kids more options, you could cut some triangles that are 3.5″ tall. Preschoolers will do better with foam (because it’s easier to pick up) and I’d only give them the smaller size triangles.

Here’s my 3 year old’s creative interpretation of the train craft:

You can easily turn this into an object lesson! A small triangle piece of craft foam/construction paper doesn’t look really pretty or useful by itself. We are just like that one small piece of craft foam. You may have times where you feel like you’re good enough on your own. However, God doesn’t call us to be perfect or do everything ourselves. He calls us to follow Him in small ways. When we follow him in our every day lives, and those around us do the same, the end result is a beautiful and useful – just like the train! What a relief that I don’t have to worry about doing it all or being “enough” all by myself. I just take small steps to follow God every single day and HE will put all the pieces together.

Here’s what the train tangram craft will look like when filled with triangles:
