VBS Crafts: Suncatchers

If you’ve followed this blog for long, you know that I DIY as many VBS projects as possible!  I am very frugal, plus I love the non-commercial look of a good ole homemade item.  Today’s project is not at all DIY, but it IS fun and a great opportunity to share Jesus in your community!

These VBS suncatchers are a great craft to have the kids make, then deliver to people in your community.  I think these are a PERFECT gift for nursing home patients… if you were stuck in a nursing home room, wouldn’t you appreciate a colorful suncatcher reminding you of the great things to come in Heaven?!  I know I would!

VBS SUNCATCHERS

Supplies
Suncatchers (see options below)
Cross suncatchers
Jesus Saves suncatchers
Patriotic cross suncatchers
Suncatcher paint or Permanent markers
Suction cup hooks
String
Construction paper
Washable Markers

Instructions

1. Let kids decorate the suncatchers, either with permanent markers or suncatcher paint.  We’re using permanent markers this year because they dry immediately and we already have them on hand.  If you use the paint, you’ll want to let the suncatchers dry at least one night before sending them home!  I would NOT use metallic permanent markers.  I tried the gold in one spot and it isn’t transparent like regular sharpies.

Frugal hack: You probably already have permanent markers on hand… did you know you can color suncatchers with permanent markers?  They are just as pretty as the suncatcher paint, plus they dry immediately… win-win in my book!

2. After the kids are finished coloring/painting their suncatchers, they can make a card for the recipient using construction paper and markers (skip this step if the kids are taking home their suncatchers).  Since we’re sending the suncatchers to the nursing home, the kids will be making a card for a nursing home resident.  I’m going to add a short letter that explains that local kids at VBS made the crosses to remind them of God’s everlasting love for them.

3. Once the suncatchers are dry, attach string and a suction cup hook to hang them.  (We’re using suction cup hooks and string this year because I’m distributing the finished suncatchers myself to the local nursing home.  If we were sending them home with the VBS kids, I’d just use string.)

You can download a printable PDF of the suncatcher tutorial here.

I’m so excited to give the kids this service project, then see the love they put into making the suncatchers!  I think they’ll be an encouragement to the local nursing home residents!

I am a long-time Vacation Bible School lover.  I’ve lead in several capacities throughout the VBS world and am currently our church’s VBS director.  It is a joy for me to be able to share VBS ideas and resources with others!  I will continue to share VBS ideas here.  Follow the blog to see more of our ideas and planning!  Please let me know if there are any specific VBS items or ideas you need help with!
