Appliance Deal: We Got a $900 Stove for Under $600

Appliance Deal: We Got a $900 Stove for Under $600 - BorrowedBlessings.net

Remember that great deal we got on our new fridge?  And how my goal was to spend $1000 for all of our new kitchen appliances?

Our new house came with used appliances, but they were mismatched and not what we wanted.  We sold all of them and set a goal of new appliances for under $1000.  Originally the plan was to purchase used appliances, but we found a killer deal on our fridge and microwave at Lowe’s and decided to try and find good deals on the stove and dishwasher new as well.

When we started shopping, I wanted all black appliances {with the textured finish, not the glossy finish}.  I have a pet peeve about fingerprints. They just drive me nuts.  Hubby’s preference was stainless, but ohhhh the fingerprints.  The microwave we found at Lowe’s was stainless and I was okay compromising {because then I could get all the rest of the appliances in black like I wanted, right?}… that’s how it was supposed to work.  Last weekend we went to Lowe’s to look at their scratch and dent section.  We still need a stove and dishwasher and have a budget of $320.  My ace in the hole here is that we were gifted a used black dishwasher… the only catch is that I’m not sure if it actually works or works well yet.  We may or may not have to purchase a new dishwasher.

The scratch and dent section had one stove we liked, but when we asked an employee what the current sale price of the item was, there was less than $20 difference between the sale price of a brand new stove and the dented stove.  We couldn’t have asked for a nicer employee!  He asked about our budget, wishes, etc.  The stoves close to our price range were bottom-of-the-line with no bells or whistles… they were very basic and not reliable brands.  We walked around the department and the employee told us that if we want a high quality appliance that will last, we should look for a Whirlpool appliance from their Made in the USA line {not all Whirlpool appliances are made in the USA, just FYI}.

The stove I fell in love with {and yes, I fell in love with a stove} was an $899 Whirlpool with tons of baking space and all the functions I could ever use.  The Lowe’s employee told me it was large enough to bake two turkeys at once.  I think he really sensed my excitement about that when I told him I’ve never prepared ONE turkey, let alone two {for real though}.  It was on sale for $699, but after some more questioning the employee told us he had seen it as low as $629.  He said we should watch for their Black Friday ad if we wanted to get a really good stove deal.  He also reminded us that Lowe’s offers price matching on competitor ads and that we could save an extra 5% by using our Lowe’s credit card.

Lo and behold, Home Depot has the same stove on sale this week – for $598!  My jaw dropped when I found that deal, given that the Lowe’s employee said $629 was a BUY IT NOW price.  The extra 5% off with the Lowe’s credit card got the price down to $568.  Plus they deliver it for free. HELLOOOOO awesome stove deal!  {Insert happy dance here.}

You might notice that I just blew my $1000 goal out of the water, and I did.  Here’s what I think about that: We could have bought the bottom-of-the-line stove for $300-$400, but the difference in quality was TOTALLY worth another $200.  As with the other projects around the house, we are on a tight budget, but we are also focused on quality.  We want products that are going to last and that are going to be joyful while they last!  Scrubbing a stove does not make me happy, so the higher quality interior finish is a huge plus for me.

Price matching tip:  If you want to price match anything, you have to make sure it is the EXACT SAME ITEM.  Appliances may have one letter or number different in the name, ensuring that price matching is difficult.  Once you find an appliance you want, take a picture of the item number and do a Google search for the item number to see what competitors are offering.  All I had to do to get the price match was show the Home Depot price on my phone. Easy peasy!
