Rocky Railway VBS Decorating: Foyer (Registration)

We used our foyer for registration, name tags, tshirts and fun activities at Rocky Railway VBS this year. Read on for photos of our foyer and list of items we used to decorate!

We had several railroad crossing signs throughout the church – tutorial here. Supplies:

Baggage claim sign – made from colored cardstock paper, cut out with a Cricut machine, then hung on a piece of string and attached to the wall with painter’s tape.

Lanyards – we let kids pick any color of lanyard they want. Their name tag color tells which group they’re in. If the parents do NOT want us to post their pictures on social media or use in church publications, we wrap a piece of bright duct tape around the lanyard (that way, you can easily look at a picture and see if it’s okay to post). We have only had one year where a parent requested no pictures be posted.

The name tag templates are available to download here. We print on colored cardstock paper, cut with a paper cutter, write the student’s name with a Sharpie, then put it in a name tag sleeve. We make name tags ahead of time for pre-registered kids, so the only name tags we have to make at VBS are for kids who register on-site.

We moved out the train table from our church nursery, and put an activity center out (which is actually mine from home). These were nice activities for kids who came early and kids of volunteers!

We offer tshirts for sale each year at cost ($6 each). This year we provided all volunteers with a free tshirt (different than these, so that volunteers were easy to identify). We made a souvenir shop sign and hung it on the wall (posterboard with thick Sharpie).

We bought a roll of the Oriental Trading table cover. We cut it in half (along the seam), then laid it on the floor and covered it with clear carpet protector film.

Side note: The Oriental Trading table cover sells out early every year. If you want it order early!

Along the wall on the right, we had the train poster set from Group Publishing. These posters were mounted on cardboard and wood frames, built by our partner church.

We have a permanent wooden welcome center which we use for registration each year. This year we made it a ticket booth. To create the ticket booth, we set up a pop up tent over the welcome center. Then we hung black paper around the sides and front of the pop up tent (attached with clear packing tape to the tent and duct tape on the seams of paper). We added red brick print plastic to the back, then made a TICKETS sign from cardboard and Sharpie, which was hung with zip ties.

This is the view from inside the welcome center (registration). The clipboards are color coordinated for each crew and match the crew’s nametag color.

I tried to list most of supplies we used in our foyer. If there’s anything I miss, feel free to add a comment and I’ll tell you where we got that item. I also did a walkthrough video if you’d like to see a quick overview of the whole building.
