We used our sanctuary for opening, closing and the music station at Rocky Railway VBS this year. Read on for photos of our sanctuary and list of items we used to decorate!

The doors leading into the sanctuary. We just hung a railroad crossing sign. This was made from yellow posterboard, a giant sharpie and hung with rolls of painter’s tape.

Railroad tracks – made with white gaffer tape. It came off the carpet and left no residue! It took 2 rolls to do this much track.

Backdrops on stage – we bought 4 of these backdrop stands. One of our amazing volunteers painted mountains on 4 king sized white sheets using acrylic paint in a paint sprayer. 3 of the painted sheets and backdrop stands were on stage, then the last one was in our fellowship hall (snack area) as a photo booth.

In between the backdrop stands, we used skinny Christmas trees (from the church Christmas decor).

We had several railroad crossing signs throughout the church – tutorial here. Supplies:

Our tunnel was made from a black sheet (folded in half) and a tan sheet (painted to look like rocks).

We also had Group’s daily bible point poster pack. I left the Trust Jesus! poster on one side of the stage all week. The opposite side of the stage had the day’s bible point poster. (I switched them out each evening.) These posters were mounted on cardboard.

Cardboard box train – tutorial here. Supplies:

Each pew had a crew sign hung on it with rolls of painter’s tape. Download printable crew sign here. We usually laminate the crew signs. I didn’t this year and they didn’t do well. I’ll definitely laminate them again in the future.

This is the view as you leave the sanctuary. We used the existing church offering containers this year. We made posterboard signs with black cardstock wheels to differentiate the boys offering container from the girls.

On the right as you leave the sanctuary, I laid out a play carpet from our church nursery and a wooden train set that we got on the local facebook buy/sell group. This spot was a huge hit for volunteer kids and kids who arrived early! I’ll definitely incorporate a small play area at the back of the sanctuary again.

I tried to list most of supplies we used above. If there’s anything I miss, feel free to add a comment and I’ll tell you where we got that item. I also did a walkthrough video if you’d like to see a quick overview of the whole building.
