Supplies:

White cardstock paper or copy paper
Scissors or paper cutter
Washable paint
Disposable foil trays (or cardboard box lids)
Toy trains (that can be painted with and washed)
Soapy water (gentle dish soap with sponges and/or scrub brushes)
Baby wipes
Markers
Glue sticks or glue bottles
Construction paper

Prep Instructions:

Use scissors or a paper cutter to cut white cardstock paper or copy paper in half (hamburger style) so that students are painting 1/2 sheet at a time.

Squirt 2-4 piles of paint into a foil trays or disposable plate (you may need several paint trays, depending how many kids you have). Leave as much space as possible between the piles of paint. Put these in the center of your painting tables.

In another area (preferably close by), put several foil trays with soapy water and sponges or scrub brushes.

At VBS:

Give each student a foil tray and a toy train.

Write each student’s name on a half sheet of white paper, then lay it in their foil tray.

Show students how to drive their train through the paint (as shown below).

After you have paint on the wheels of your train, drive it across your paper.

Let students paint with their trains. I let my kids make 2 paintings each.

Once students are finished painting, let them take their trains to the soapy water and wash them with the sponges/scrub brushes.

If students still have paint on their hands after washing the cars, clean their hands with baby wipes (or take them to the bathroom to wash).

Once the paintings are dry, glue each one to a sheet of colored construction paper.

Depending on the age of your students, you can write a phrase on each sheet or let the students write them using markers. (If you’re writing the phrases for the students, you could write them ahead of time.)

On our paintings, I wrote:
-Jesus helps me stay on track!
-Jesus loves me even when I veer off track.

You could also let the students write their bible verse or daily bible point.
