God is Greater Oil Pastel Craft

Try this oil pastel craft as a reminder to your kiddos that God will always be greater than any mountain or valley you’ll face.

Have you seen the design below? It stands for God is greater than my mountains and valleys (or God is greater than my highs and lows). This design is great with the Rocky Railway mountain theme! I’m making tshirts with the design (and several others – see them all here).

I thought the design would also be great for a craft. I ordered a set of oil pastels to try, but then found we already had some in our church supply closet – yay for saving money by using supplies already on hand!

Supplies:

Art paper
Masking tape
Oil pastel crayons

Instructions:

Give each kiddo a piece of art paper and have them write their name on the back.

Use masking tape to make the God is greater than my mountains and valleys symbol. For younger kids, I’d do this step the morning you’re going to use the craft. If you do it too far in advance, the paper will tear when you remove the tape.

I used strips of masking tape that were about 3″ long.

Color over the entire sheet of paper using oil pastels. (I tried using regular crayons but the oil pastels are much more vibrant.)

When you’re done covering the entire sheet, use one color to outline each symbol. Press down hard with the oil pastel crayon to make this line dark.

Carefully (and slowly) remove the masking tape. The paper started to tear when my daughter tried to tear the tape off quickly.

If you want to, you can write God is greater than my mountains and valleys inside the symbols.

I was curious how the oil pastels would look on black paper… here’s the result!
