VBS Crafts: DIY Handprint Stepping Stones
As a parent, I LOVE crafts that last a long time and capture precious bits of my baby, like her handprints! One of my favorite VBS crafts to make are DIY Handprint Stepping Stones. These are inexpensive to make and are such a treasured keepsake for parents!

DIY HANDPRINT STEPPING STONES
Supplies
Concrete mix (this is usually the best price at a local home improvement store)
Optional: Concrete dye
Bucket to mix concrete in
Disposable stepping stone molds
Stepping stone letter stamps
Gems/marbles
Paper tags
Permanent markers
Tape
Budget-saving tip: Use foil carryout containers as the stepping stone molds! They’re much less expensive than the reusable plastic molds marketed for stepping stones.
Instructions
1. Mix the concrete by following the instructions on the package. (For extra fun, you can dye the concrete!)
2. Pour concrete into the molds. (This works best if you do it before the kids are ready to make their handprints. The concrete should be partially set up before kids add handprints and decorations. We let the concrete set for 30 minutes to 2 hours before putting handprints in.)
3. Write each child’s name on a piece of paper and tape it to the foil container. This will make it MUCH easier to distribute the stepping stones!
4. Put each child’s handprint in the center of the stepping stone.
5. Stamp each child’s name in the stepping stone. I leave the letters in the concrete for a few minutes to make sure they set well.
6. Let kids add accents to the stepping stone. (This can be done while the letter stamps are still in the concrete.)
You can send the stones home the same night you make them, but it would be better to let them dry overnight. I took our stepping stone out of the foil tray about 5 hours after mixing the concrete. It was hard to the touch, but not fully set.
