Decorating Ideas: Outer Space Theme

Our church changes our children’s space decorations each month to match the monthly lesson theme. We try to keep the decorations simple and frugal, while bringing the theme to life for the kids. Check out these frugal ideas for decorating your children’s ministry space with an outer space theme! This post may contain affiliate links.

To accomplish the mission control/outer space theme, I’m brainstorming about astronauts, spaceships, planets and NASA.

How fun is this coloring spaceship?! It’s super fun and perfect for those times when you need a no-prep activity to entertain kids.

We have two bulletin boards to decorate (one on either side of our video screen where we show the lesson). You can currently order the fabric backdrop above (5’x7′) for $13.99. For a more DIY option, use either disposable silver foil blankets (reminiscent of an astronaut’s costume) or navy blue plastic tablecovers (like the night sky) to cover the bulletin board, then add some accents on top of it (see ideas below).

This planet wrapping paper is another background option for a bulletin board, a wall or a table runner.

Did you have glow in the dark stars on your bedroom ceiling as a kid? I know I did! There are now glow in the dark star stickers, which would be much quicker and easier to hang than the plastic stars! Either style (plastic glow stars or adhesive glow star stickers) would really pop against the dark blue background.

These solar system whirls could be hung on a bulletin board or from the ceiling!

Want to be even more frugal? You could follow the tutorial here to make your own planets using cardstock paper, acrylic paint and shaving cream.

For some 3D fun, follow this tutorial to make hanging planets using giant balloons, hula hoops and fishing line.

I think this astronaut helmet pool float is hilarious! It’s big (48″) and would be a great attention-getter. I’d blow this up and sit it on the floor at the edge of the video screen.

I’m not sure that we’ll have time to play dress up, but this astronaut costume would look cute hanging up in your kidsmin space!
